The creativity inspired by Enders Island and the growing St. Edmund’s Sacred Art Community helps our retreatants and residents find new ways to connect with our Creator through the beauty and wonder around us. So many gifted gardeners, artists, musical performers, writers, and tradespeople offer their talent and skills as a ministry to those who visit Enders Island. Here, in our Creation Care and artistic expertise, we foster sacred spaces for spiritual growth and renewal through art and prayer drawn from often-forgotten traditions in our Catholic heritage.
SEEKING GOD IN ART
St. Edmund’s Retreat, in serving people who are seeking God, continues to help open minds, hearts, and souls to His graces. Art is one of the surest ways to bring people closer to God.
In his Letter to Artists, Pope John Paul II wrote, “In order to communicate the message entrusted to her by Christ, the Church needs art. Art must make perceptible, and as far as possible attractive, the world of the spirit, of the invisible, of God.” All workshops and events offered by St. Edmund’s Sacred Art Institute — just like Enders Island itself — serve to communicate this important message.
This message bears repeating. We are all children of God, Who loved us so much that He gave his only Son to save us from alienation in a lost paradise and to bring us back to joy in Him. Sacred Art helps us receive this message and guides us closer to God by pointing to what is transcendent and invisible, to what is beautiful, good, and true.
